How to Draw Pets – Step-by-Step Instructions (Cartoon Style)

Our pets are part of our families, and they are so cute and funny. Why not draw your family pet and hang their framed portrait on the wall, or just on your bulletin board, or refrigerator?

Follow these easy how to draw step-by-step tutorials for a cat, husky, budgie, and a turtle. Maybe add in some of your own pet’s unique colors or traits.

How to Draw a Cat

Step 1

Start by drawing an oval shape for the head. It can be boxy, circular or slightly triangular.

Step 2

Time to start making a few triangles. Draw two triangle shapes for the ears and one triangle shape for the nose. You could also make the nose oval or round. I drew the nose on mine oval because my cat has an oval-shaped nose.

Step 3

Let’s draw the cat face. Draw two smaller triangle shaped lines inside the ears. There can be smaller triangles below for ear fluff. Make two circles for the eyes. Then do two smaller circles, and then the cat’s pupils. Add more detail to the shape of the nose. Then create the mouth by drawing a short straight line from the bottom of the nose downwards. Starting next to this line (on the left) draw the mouth curve, bring it down and up again to meet the line you made under the nose. Continue with another curve.

Draw one more curve in below the two curves (in the middle). The mouth is now complete.

Step 4

Draw whiskers.

Also start drawing the body. Draw two curved lines, one on the left side and one on the right. Add teeth to the mouth of your cat if you’d like.

Step 5

Draw feet. Start with the front ones (long U shape). Hind legs are optional, but they can complement the drawing.

Step 6

Just a few more details left. Like claws, the line that completes the belly, and a tail.

Step 7

Erase any unnecessary lines and add any last minute details, such as eyebrows.

Final Step

Color your cat drawing. I colored mine grey like my cat Mazi-Grey, but you could do any color or combination or colors based on your real-life pet.

Mazi-Grey

Congratulations! You have just drawn a cute little cat!

How to Draw a Husky

Huskies were originally bred to do certain jobs to help humans. They were first raised in Siberia to serve as companions, guards, and sled dogs. Today, many people keep these gentle and intelligent dogs as pets.

The husky is famous for its ability as a sled racing dog. Up to 16 dogs are hitched to the sled in tandem, two in each row. Dog sleds are also still used as a means of transportation in the snowy Arctic.

Step 1

Begin by drawing a circle for the husky’s head.

Step 2

Draw a horizontal oval shape beneath the head. This will form the husky’s body.

Step 3

Connect the head and body using two curved, zig-zag lines. The lines should meet in opposing points to resemble shaggy fur.

Step 4

Sketch the husky’s face. For each ear, extend two curved lines upward to meet above the head, enclosing curved triangle shapes. For the snout, begin with a large “C” shaped line crossing the side of the face. Draw a curved line upwards from the snout to meet the ear.

Step 5

Draw the back legs. For each leg, extend a set of lines downward from the body. Connect the leg lines at the bottom using a series of short, “C” shaped curved lines to represent the toes.

Step 6

Draw the front legs. For each leg, extend two lines downward. Then, connect the lines, using small “C” shaped lines to represent the toes.

Step 7

Erase the guide lines from the head, body, and legs, leaving a clean outline of your husky.

Step 8

Add detail to the husky. Draw a curved triangle within the near ear. Distinguish the husky’s lighter face and underbelly from its darker back using a series of connected, curved lines. The lines should meet in jagged points to indicate fur. Draw the tail. Use a series of curved and overlapping lines to sketch the curly tail. Draw an oval within an oval to form each eye. Draw a small circle inside the inner oval, and shade between the shapes. Draw a curved line above each eye to indicate the eyebrows. For the nose, sketch a rounded, upside down triangle. Use curved lines to sketch the mouth. Add a tooth hanging out of the mouth.

Final Step

Color your husky. Huskies are often grey and white. They can also come in shades of brown and black. Some huskies have heterochromia so I drew mine with one blue eye and one green eye.

How to Draw a Budgie

Aren’t budgie’s cute? I was just looking at some today when visiting a relative. They are so adorable. Here’s how to draw a cartoon version of a budgie.

Step 1

Draw a small circle for the budgie’s eye. Inside that circle, near the top, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. Add a bigger circle in the middle and shade it in for the pupil. As you shade in the pupil, don’t overlap the tiny glare circle.

Step 2

To the left of the eye, sketch a small oval for the beak. Make the bottom part pointy. Add an extra small, curved line on the right for the lower part of the budgie’s beak.

Step 3

At the top of the budgie’s beak, draw a short line and a dot for the nose.

Step 4

Draw the budgie’s head by making a small mark high above the eye. Draw a curved line from the beak to the small mark for the front part of the head. Add another curved line that slopes to the right of the small mark for the back of the head.

Step 5

Draw a long, curved line under the beak for the first part of the budgie’s body. Draw another long, curved line on the right side for the back of the body.

Step 6

Under the body, draw two long horizontal lines for a perch. Draw a small circle on each end of the horizontal lines to complete the perch.

Step 7

At the top of the perch, draw four small, long, curved ovals for the visible toes. The budgie’s toes should overlap the top line of the perch.

Step 8

Inside the body, near the right side, draw a long, curved line for the folded wing. The wing should be pointy at the bottom. This shape resembles a half heart. On the lower, right side of the body, draw a couple of long, curved lines for the budgie’s tail.

Step 9

Add a few lines on the top, right side of the head for extra detail. Under the eye, draw a couple of circles for the patches on the feathers. Near the top of the budgie’s wing, draw a few wavy lines for more detail on the feathers.

Step 10

Erase an unnecessary lines. Your budgie is complete.

Final Step

Color your budgie! Budgies come in a variety of colors. For a standard budgie look, color the head, wing and back of the body yellow. Color the rest of the body green. Use blue or purple for the nose, the throat patches and a bit on the tail. Use peach or yellow-orange for the beak and toes. Use brown for the perch. If you have a pet budgie, try to duplicate its colors in your drawing.

How to Draw a Turtle

Step 1

Draw a small oval for the turtle’s eye. Add a line in the top middle for the eyelid.

Step 2

Draw a line that starts at the eye, then curves to the left and down for the turtle’s muzzle. Curve the line up back toward the eye to create the top part of the mouth.

Step 3

To the left of the turtle’s eye, draw the top part of an oval with a line in the middle for the other eye.

Step 4

Draw a tiny dot for the pupils inside each eye. Above each eye, draw a curved line for the heavy eyebrows. The brow on the right should curve down. Under the top part of the mouth, draw a short, curved line for the mouth’s opening.

Step 5

Draw two lines inside the mouth for the tongue. Add a line above the smile for the turtle’s cheek. Draw curved lines to the left of the mouth and another to the right of the eyes for the head.

Step 6

Below the back of the head, draw a short, curved line for the top of the turtle’s neck. Below the mouth, draw a longer curved line for the bottom part of the neck.

Step 7

Starting next to the neck, draw a long, wavy line that slopes down and to the right for the first part of the shell. Pay attention to where the line curves back up at the bottom. That’s where the first leg will be. Add another line on top that parallels the first one to make the edge of the shell thicker.

Step 8

Below the section where the shell curves, draw a shape similar to a long bell for the first leg. Don’t make the leg too long. Add three curved lines at the bottom for the turtle’s nails and a few more lines in the middle for wrinkles.

Step 9

Draw some curved lines that connect the wavy line, the neck and leg to form the bottom shell.

Step 10

Below the front of the shell, draw the visible part of the second front leg.

Step 11

Continue drawing the edge of the turtle’s shell as a set of wavy lines toward the right. The leg will be where the lines curve up.

Step 12

Below the section of the shell that curves up, draw the hind leg the same way as the front legs. Use a long bell shape for the entire leg. Add three curved lines for the turtle’s nails at the bottom.

Step 13

Draw two short lines between the legs to finish the bottom part of the shell. To draw the top part of the shell, make a mark to indicate how tall you want to make it. Then draw curved lines that slope down on either side of the small mark to complete the shape of the turtle’s shell.

Step 14

Between the legs, draw the visible portion of the hind leg on the other side of the body. On the lower, right side of the body, draw two small, curved lines for the tail. Add the turtle’s shell detail by first drawing two sloping, vertical lines near the bottom. Add a horizontal line at the top to connect the sloping lines and close off the shape. At the top, draw a similar shape but invert it so that it’s upside-down. This makes the pattern for the shell. On the sides, draw angled lines to complete the tortoise shell design.

Final Step

Erase and fix any errors, and color your turtle any color you want. I used a mixture of light green for the body, dark green, brown, and beige for the shell, beige for the nails, pink for the tongue, and red for the inside of the mouth.

I hope you enjoy drawing these cute little pets. See you soon in our virtual art world.
