How to Draw Forest Animals – Step-by-Step Instructions (Cartoon Style)

There’s something really magical about forest animals. They are symbols of the true beauty of nature in their own natural habitats. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to draw a deer, fox, raccoon, and a wolf pup.

How to Draw a Deer

Step 1

Draw a small, curved line for the deer’s eye. Darken the line and make it thicker. The shape of the curved line should be similar to an upside down U.

Step 2

Inside the eye, draw an oval for the iris. The iris should be in the middle of the eye. Above the eye, draw a curved line for the eyebrow.

Step 3

Inside the iris, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of the iris, draw a large dot for the pupil.

Step 4

Draw a line that curves around the top left of the eye for the front of the head.

Step 5

Below the front of the head, draw a squared C shape for the muzzle. Curve the line on the bottom upward.

Step 6

On the tip of the muzzle, draw a curved angle for the nose. Draw a long line at the bottom for the rest of the head. Curve the line upward on the right side for the jaw.

Step 7

On the top right side, draw a curved angle with a point at the top for the ear. Draw a small curved line inside the ear.

Step 8

On top of the head, draw a long curved line for the antlers.

Step 9

Draw more thin, curved shapes on the left side for more branches of the antler.

Step 10

Duplicate the shapes for the other antler. Draw the top part first, using the first antler as a template.

Step 11

Add the other ear.

Step 12

Draw a long line for the neck and chest under the head. Curve the bottom of the line toward the right.

Step 13

Draw another long line on the right side for the other edge of the neck and the back.

Step 14

Draw two long, vertical lines under the chest to form the first leg.

Step 15

Draw a double sideways U to the left for the deer’s other front leg. Add a line to close the U.

Step 16

Draw a curved, horizontal line for the belly to the right of the first leg. On the top right, draw a couple of curved lines that come to a point for the tail.

Step 17

Draw a curved line under the tail for the hind leg. Draw a sloping line to the right of the belly to complete the top part of the hind leg. For the bottom section of the leg, draw a thin vertical shape, and bend it a bit at the bottom.

Step 18

Draw the deer’s other hind leg the same way, but behind the front leg.

Final Step

Color the body of your deer light brown but leave the outlined sections black. Color the antlers beige and the eye blue. Color the under belly, ears, snout and part of the tail and back leg a natural or tan. Color the hooves and nose black.

How to Draw a Fox

Step 1

Draw two curved lines next to each other for the fox’s eyes. Darken and thicken the lines. The shape of the curved lines should be similar to upside down U’s.

Step 2

Under each upside down U, draw small ovals for the irises. The circle on the left should be close to the right tip of the line.

Step 3

In the middle of each iris, draw ovals for the pupils. At the top right of each pupil, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. Add curved shapes over each eye for the eyebrows.

Step 4

Below the eyes, slightly to the left of center, draw a small curved triangle for the nose.

Step 5

Below the nose, draw a wavy line for the mouth that looks like a W. Curve the left tip of the mouth up toward the eye to create the muzzle. Add a short, curved line under the mouth for the chin.

Step 6

Draw a series of quick, short strokes on the left, top and right leaving gaps for the ears. These strokes represent fur.

Step 7

Draw a slanted, pointed triangle on the top right of the head to fill the blank spaces between the fur. This is the right ear.

Step 8

Draw the left ear the same way. Draw a series of quick, short strokes under the head in a rectangular shape for the furry neck and torso beginning.

Step 9

Under the right side of the chest, draw two short, vertical lines for the top part of the first leg. Now add a curved line for the bottom of the foot and draw the toes as short lines inside.

Step 10

Draw the other front leg the same way, and add the toes at the bottom the same way.

Step 11

Draw a short horizontal line to the right of the legs for the bottom of the torso. Draw a curved line on the right side of the head for the back of the body.

Step 12

Draw the hind leg using two diagonal lines on the lower right side of the body. Add a curved line at the bottom for the foot and a couple of small lines at the tip for the toes.

Step 13

To the left, draw the visible portion of the fox’s other hind leg in a similar fashion.

Step 14

Draw the tail on the right side by first drawing two long curved lines. The tail should be big and fluffy, so draw these two lines far apart. Draw some zig-zag lines at the top for the tip of the tail.

Final Step

Color your fox! I used orange for the top portion of the head, most of the tail, top portion of the legs, and the body. I used white for the tip of the tail, the ear fluff, eyebrows, and the lower half of the head and neck/torso. I used brown for the feet. I used blue for the irises, black for the pupils, and white for the eye glare.

How to Draw a Raccoon

Step 1

Draw two short, curved, horizontal arcs for the top part of the eyes. Add a line under each arc for the bottom part of the eyes.

Step 2

Inside the eyes, draw circles for the pupils. Above each eye , draw curved double lines for the eyebrows.

Step 3

Below the eyes, off to the left, draw a rounded, upside-down triangle for the nose. Add two semi-circles on each side for the nostrils.

Step 4

Under the nose, lightly sketch a curved line with short strokes to represent fur for the mouth. Continue to draw the line on the left side and curve it up toward the eye to create the muzzle.

Step 5

Starting at the left side of the muzzle, draw a series of angled lines for the left side of the head. The angled lines will represent fur. Draw a similar set of lines to the right of the muzzle. The tops should end at about eye level.

Step 6

Draw very short lines on each side to make the raccoon’s head taller. Above the eyes, lightly sketch a curved line for the top of the head. These represent spikes for the fur.

Step 7

On the top, left and right sides of the head, draw upside-down V’s for the ears. Draw a few lines for the fur inside the ears.

Step 8

Draw a mask shape around the eyes. The mask should be long and stretch the whole length of the cheeks.

Step 9

Draw a series of short, slanted v-shaped lines under the head for the furry chest. The chest should curve low to form a U-like shape under the head.

Step 10

To the right of the chest, draw two short, vertical lines for the top part of the first leg. Now add a curved line for the bottom of the foot and draw two short lines inside for the toes.

Step 11

On the left side, draw the other front leg. Use two short, vertical lines for the top part of the leg and a curved line at the bottom for the foot.

Step 12

Draw a few short slanted v’s to the right of the legs for the bottom of the torso. To the right of the head, draw a curved line for the top part of the body.

Step 13

Add the hind leg by drawing a sloping line on the lower, right side. Draw a curved line below that for the foot. Draw a vertical line above for the left edge of the leg and add the toes at the bottom.

Step 14

To the left, draw the visible portion of the other hind leg.

Step 15

To the right of the body, draw a long, curved shape using slanted v’s for the tail.

Final Step

Color your raccoon! I used dark grey for the nose, black for the mask, paw tips, tail stripes, and ear details. I used white for the ears, under belly, lower half of the face, and neck. I used grey for the forehead, body, legs, and tail stripes. I used orange for the eyes.

How to Draw a Wolf

Step 1

Draw a small, thick, curved line for the wolf pup’s closed eye. Add one pointy end at the bottom for the eyelashes. Draw a thinner, curved line on the left side for the eyebrow. Draw a few tiny lines on the right for fur.

Step 2

To the top, right of the eye, draw a small, curved triangle for the nose.

Step 3

Draw a small line to the left of the nose for the top of the muzzle. To the right of the nose, draw a short, curved line for the top lip. Draw a small circle at the end of the line, and shade it in for the O-shaped howling mouth. Below the mouth, draw a small, curved line for the bottom lip.

Step 4

Starting at the muzzle, draw a curved line above the eye and eyebrow for the front of the head. Then draw a curved line that’s made up of short slanted v’s on the left for the furry top of the head.

Step 5

On the bottom, left side, draw an angled line similar to a large sideways V for the ear. Draw a few lines within the shape of the ear to give it more structure.

Step 6

Add a smaller sideways V above the first ear for the ear that’s on the other side of the head. Starting below the ear, draw a series of short v shapes for the side of the tilted head. Connect with a short line below the mouth.

Step 7

Below the head, on the right side, draw a series of slanted v’s for the chest.

Step 8

Below the chest, add the front leg by drawing a short line that curves at the bottom. Curve the line toward the left to create the bottom of the foot and add curved lines inside for the toes.

Step 9

Draw a similar shape to the right for the other front foot and toes.

Step 10

Add the hind foot by first drawing a short, curved line to the left of the front foot. Draw a longer horizontal line at the bottom for the bottom part of the foot and add curved lines for the toes. Above the foot, draw a semi-circular line that’s made up of short slanted v’s for the folded leg.

Step 11

Draw long, curved, v-shaped lines on the left side for the back portion of the furry body. Curve the line up at the bottom so that it ends under the leg.

Step 12

Draw long, curved v-shaped lines starting on the lower, left side of the body for the tail. The base of the tail should be narrow, the middle thick, and the tip rounded.

Final Step

Color your wolf pup! I used a combination of grey and light grey for the head, body, tail, ears, and paws. I used black for the nose and added a white stripe for detail.

Here’s a little compilation video for these forest animal drawings. I composed the music. I call it Forest Funk.
