To me, Halloween is a fun kids holiday. It has always been about dressing up in an amazing costume, school parties, going trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, and candy, candy, candy! However with more and more families foregoing trick or treating these days due to safety concerns, doing family art projects are a great way for kids to still have some Halloween night fun.
Here are some extremely easy halloween-themed art projects that can be done in a short amount of time to decorate for halloween, and add some creative and fun art time for your little kiddos. Choose 1 or all 9! You can do whichever you and your kids want!
Lollipop Ghosts
These are so easy, and a fun way for kids to decorate lollipops to take to school for their class treat, take to a halloween party, or to hand out to trick-or-treaters.
Supplies
- Kleenex (or any other brand) Tissues, 2 per ghost
- Tootsie Pops (or any other brand, as long as they’re round)
- Black magic marker
- Thin orange and/or black ribbon
Directions
- Lay the 2 tissues on top of each other.
- Place the lollipop in the middle.
- Bunch up the tissue over the lollipop and tie with a small piece of ribbon.
- Use the black Sharpie to make the eyes.
- Cut 12” of black and/or orange ribbon for each ghost. Tie a bow (same as if tying a shoelace) around the neck of the ghost.
Now how’s that for the easiest little ghost ever?
Paper Bag Monster Puppets
These are so much fun to make. There is no right or wrong here. Each monster can be totally unique.
Supplies
- Paper lunch bag
- Colored construction or cardstock paper
- Scissors
- Markers
- Glue
- Googly eyes
Directions
- Cut out colored paper to cover the front and bottom of your paper bag in the color(s) of your choice.
- Use your colored cardstock paper, construction paper, scissors, markers, and googly eyes to design a unique monster.
- Let your creativity take over, glue eyeballs everywhere, draw or cut out and glue on teeth, fun patterns, pointy ears, long tongues, and horns. Whatever you imagine as a monster!
- When your monsters are done, enjoy watching your kids put on a cute Halloween puppet show as party entertainment!
Spider Suckers
These are also easy to make, and another option for sending lollipops to school for the class or a halloween party treat.
Supplies
- Tootsie Pops (or any other brand, as long as they’re round)
- Black 12-inch Pipe cleaners (2 per spider)
- Googly eyes
- Scissors
- Glue
Directions
- Each spider will use 2 pipe cleaners. Begin by taking your pipe cleaners and cutting them in half so that you have 4 pieces.
- Align the 4 pipe cleaner pieces and place a lollipop in the center. Wrap 1 side of the pipe cleaners all the way around the lollipop stem. Pull tight.
- Flip the lollipop over and separate the “legs”. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaners to create little feet. It can be a little tricky to get the spider to lay flat with the weight of the sucker, so you have to play with it a bit to get it exactly right.
- Glue on the googly eyes.
There you go! A creepy, but cute little spider.
Wrapped Mummy
This is a great one for a toddler. They will love wrapping the pipe cleaner around the craft or popsicle stick, and will feel so proud that they helped out with the Halloween decorations. Just make sure they don’t stick their little fingers with the ends of the pipe cleaner.
Supplies
- 1 white pipe cleaner
- 1 craft or popsicle stick
- Black marker
Directions
- Wrap the white pipe cleaner around the craft or popsicle stick in a winding fashion.
- Use the black marker to make the eyes at the top (between the first and second wraps at the top).
Halloween Toilet Paper Roll Creatures
Kids will love making these toilet paper roll creatures. This is also a great recycling lesson since you are using toilet paper rolls. Here are instructions on how to make a bat, cat, pumpkin, mummy, Frankenstein, and a vampire. Let your kids choose their favorite one to make.
Supplies
- Toilet Paper Rolls (6 to make all of these)
- Construction paper – white, orange, green, black, purple, red, and tan
- 2 Medium-sized googly eyes
- Glue
- Yellow or gold fine-point marker
- Black fine-point marker
- Small strips of toilet paper
- Hole-puncher
- Black pipe cleaner
Directions
Here are the 6 different creatures with step-by-step instructions on how to make them.
Bat
- Cut out green or purple construction paper to cover your toilet paper roll.
- Cut 2 fangs from white construction paper and glue on. Glue the googly eyes on above the fangs.
- Fold the top of the toilet paper roll so in a way, ears for the bat are created.
- For the wings, cut from black construction paper slanted at the ends, and slightly zig-zagged at the bottom. Glue the wings to the back of the toilet paper roll.
Black Cat
- Cut out black construction paper to cover your toilet paper roll.
- Glue on 2 googly eyes.
- Using a gold or yellow fine-tip marker, draw on the nose and whiskers.
- Fold the top of the toilet paper roll so in a way, ears for the cat are created.
- Use a black pipe cleaner for the tail, by curling it a few times, and using the hole-puncher to make a hole at the back of the toilet paper roll, and feeding the pipe cleaner through.
Pumpkin
- Cut out orange construction paper to cover your toilet paper roll.
- Cut the eyes, nose and mouth out of black construction paper and glue on.
- Cut the stem from an extra paper roll and glue to the top.
- Cut a strip of green construction paper, curl around the marker then glue beside the stem.
Frankenstein
- Cut out green construction paper to cover your toilet paper roll.
- Cut the eyebrows and mouth from black construction paper and glue on. Glue the googly eyes on top of the eyebrows.
- For the hair, cut a strip of black construction paper. Then cut out zig zag marks on the bottom of this strip. Glue this to the top of the paper roll.
Mummy
- Glue on the googly eyes.
- Cut out strips of toilet paper and glue them on top of your paper roll to look like a mummy. It’s ok if you leave some spaces not covered.
Vampire
- Cut out tan construction paper to cover your toilet paper roll.
- Cut out the hair from black construction paper and glue to the top. When cutting out the hair, make a peak so that it comes down close to where your eyes will be.
- Glue on the googly eyes.
- Draw on the mouth with a sharpie.
- Cut out two small triangles for the fangs with white paper and glue on.
- Cut out a bow from red paper and glue to the front of the paper roll.
- Cut out a large triangle from red paper and glue to the back.

- Use a black paint marker or magic marker to color the top of the hand black to make the hair. Add some zig zag lines in the hair.
- Cut out two strips from black paper and glue down for the eyebrows and mouth.
- Glue the googly eyes on top of the eyebrows.

- Trace your handprint so that the pinky is at the folded part of the paper. Cut out your handprint leaving the folded side where the pinky is so the card will open up. Watch the video tutorial at the bottom of this post for full details on how it opens!
- Glue on the googly eyes (put one slightly smaller than the other on the right).
- Draw on a mouth with a black sharpie.
Handprint Vampire
- Fold over a white piece of paper. Trace the handprint so that the pinky is on the folded part of the paper. Cut out the handprint, making sure to leave the portion on the pinky side so it will open up like a card.

- Glue the cape to the back of the handprint.
- Make a bow tie from red paper and glue this to the bottom of the handprint. Glue on top of the handprint being sure to not glue to the cape so you can still open up the card.
- Finally, glue on your googly eyes.
These are so cute!
Plastic Cup Spiders
These plastic cup spiders are cute, and not at all scary for little kids and so easy to make.
Supplies
- Orange plastic cups. Orange Dixie or Hefty cups are usually available around Halloween. Black or white would work fine as well.
- 4 black pipe cleaners
- Hand-held hole punch
- Googly eyes
- Markers
Directions
- Using the hand-held hole punch, punch 4 holes on each side of the top of the cup. They don’t have to be perfect.
- Lace your black pipe cleaners through the 4 holes from the left to the right side of the cup to make 8 legs.
- Turn the cup upside down.
- Bend the pipe cleaners to make spider legs.
- Add googly eyes
- Draw a mouth, nose, and some dots on your spider with markers.
Toilet Paper Pumpkins
Toilet paper pumpkins are a great way to spruce up your autumn decor.
Supplies
- Fabric – Find some pretty Halloween designed or fall colored fabric, like plaid or flannel. You will need a 18 inch square of fabric. You can buy a fat quarter that is 18” x 21” (45.72cm x 53.34cm). Walmart has this exact size in their Seasonal Fat Quarters fabric section for $1.47 each. You will need one per pumpkin. You can also purchase half a yard of fabric, which will be enough to make 2 pumpkins.
- 1 full roll of toilet paper.
- 1 small 3 inch stick to use for the stem. I just went outside and found one. You could also use a cinnamon stick to add some fragrance.
- 1 green pipe cleaner, OR 1 piece of green fabric ribbon, OR 1 floral leaf with wire to wrap around the stem.
- 1 pencil
Directions
- Lay out your fabric.
- Place a roll of toilet paper in the center.
- Unroll and re-roll some of the toilet paper loosely and twisted to make it a little fatter. This will give you a rounder pumpkin shape.
- Gather the corners of the fabric and tuck inside the toilet paper roll. Use a pencil to push the fabric down if necessary.
- Twist a green pipe cleaner, or tie a green ribbon or floral leaf around the stick stem.
- Stick the stem into the middle of the fabric-covered toilet paper roll.
Voila! Easiest pumpkin decoration ever. Also, a great way to add some Halloween decor to the bathroom and hide an extra roll of toilet paper at the same time. Win-win!
Paper Plate Witch
After scrolling down the page and glancing at all of these Halloween projects I had completed sitting on my table, I realized something. I haven’t done a witch. So without further ado, here she is!
Supplies
- 1 Paper plate
- 1 Green paint marker, magic marker, or some green paint
- 10 Yellow pipe cleaners or 10 pieces of yellow yarn
- 1 Sheet of black construction paper
- 1 Small scrap piece of orange or gold construction paper
- 2 Large googly eyes
- 1 Single hole-puncher
- 1 Black fine-tip marker
Directions
- Paint or color the full center portion of the paper plate with green paint or green markers, leaving only 1 inch of the paper plate rim white.
- To make the hair, use the hole puncher to punch a hole on each side of the top of the paper plate. Feed the pipe cleaners or yarn strands through the holes (5 for the left side and 5 for the right side), and twist or tie at the back of the paper plate.
- Using the black construction paper, cut out a large triangle that’s about 9 inches at the base, plus a 1 inch rectangle strip about 9 1/2 inches long to make the hat. Glue the rectangle base to the bottom of the triangle. Glue the completed hat onto the paper plate. Make sure your hat covers the holes where you fed the pipe cleaners or yarn through.
- Glue 2 large googly eyes onto your paper plate.
- Cut out a small triangle from your orange or gold construction paper. Turn the triangle upside down and glue onto the paper plate to make the witch’s nose.
- Draw the witch’s mouth using a black magic marker.
Isn’t she scary? You can easily hang her with string, ribbon, or just use some double-sided tape to stick her to the front door. What an awesome way to greet your Halloween guests!
I hope you and your kids enjoy making some or all of these Halloween art projects, and I hope you have a very happy Halloween. I will see you soon in our virtual art world!
